A Systematic Approach to Organizing Kitchen Shelves

!±8± A Systematic Approach to Organizing Kitchen Shelves

The kitchen is often the center of activity in many modern homes. It is the place where friends and family gather for holiday celebrations. It's the place where kids settle in at the kitchen table for an evening of homework. It's the place where families share meals and enjoy traditions. It is the place where romances are kindled and birthdays are celebrated.

With such a constant barrage of activity, it can be difficult for today's busy family to keep a neat, organized kitchen. Fortunately, it's not difficult with some of the tools available, especially in the form of kitchen shelf systems.

Older cabinets often feature static shelves that cannot be moved. Things that get used less often get pushed to the back and many people forget that they even have these items. The other disadvantage of fixed shelves is that it is very difficult to reach things in the back, especially unwieldy things like large pots and pans. It's dark inside a cabinet so it is also hard to see everything that's on the back of a shelf.

Installing pull-out shelves helps to alleviate some of these little inconveniences. Pull out-shelves can be totally flat like a regular shelf or they can be up to 6 inches deep to keep taller items from tipping over. They also come in many different finishes to match any existing cabinet color scheme. These sliding shelves usually mount to any permanent shelf or to the floor of the cabinet, making them an ideal choice for the do-it-yourselfer. This type of shelving is a great addition to any existing shelf system.

Pull-out shelves are ideal for organizing pots, pans and cookie sheets. Smaller things, like spices, present a different challenge.

A spice rack is a must-have for the home chef. They are made of many different materials. Wood is a favorite due to its attractiveness as well as its durability. Many cabinet spice racks are expandable, so as one's spice collection grows the rack can easily be adjusted to accommodate the extra jars. Spice racks are intended for use in many different locations in the kitchen. There are racks that sit on the countertop, racks that fit snugly into drawers and racks that could organize an extensive spice collection in a large pantry. Sometimes wall niches can also accommodate storage of this type.

Whatever type of shelving goes into a kitchen, it is also important to group items by their purpose and to assign them to certain cabinets and areas of the kitchen. This will make it easier and more convenient to find the items when they are needed.
